The Night Shift

Nattskiftet, or The Night Shift, is an art project started on Instagram by Stockholm-based artist Lisen Haglund. The work may seem simple at first; usually an image of a woman with a confident look, accompanied by a controversial caption. If you view the pieces as part of a whole, you see something else. This project deals with feminism, magic, sexuality, agency, mental illness, solitude, and the powers and frustrations that often come with being a woman.

The women in Lisen Haglund’s work seem to ignore societal conventions placed on them, but still feel the weight and burden of their presence. I feel like these are representations of the thoughts we often have, but maybe don’t get to express. One of my favorite pictures from the series is a figure with her back turned, with the caption, “-You look sexy.” “-Did I f*cking ask you?” It’s a reminder of the unsolicited opinions we often face as we move through the world and take up space as women, especially when we don’t conform to the idea of what a woman “should” be. I also love that the person with the comment doesn’t actually appear in the piece; that person is not the focus here. Instead we are blessed with the image of a garter-clad figure very literally walking away from the bad behavior and desires society projects towards her.

Another aspect I love is her characters’ very conspicuous femme nature. Lisen Haglund creates strong women, and those strong women still wear high heels, garters, and lipstick. This art does not entertain the idea that femininity, or feminine sexuality, will diminish our power. Often her subjects appear only semi-clothed; their sexiness and strength are not mutually exclusive characteristics. This is not work that caters to respectability politics.  An unfortunate conflict exists, however, with Nattskiftet’s vision and its chosen platform. Often the work is censored by Instagram, despite the clause in the terms allowing nudity in fine art. In an interview I found with Lisen Haglund, (which you can read here) her response was, “It pisses me off and now I’m posting as many tits as I can just to f*ck with them.” If you could sum up Nattskiftet in just one sentence, I think that may be it.

Want to channel that cool-girl, devil-may-care attitude of the subjects seen in Nattskiftet? I know I do. Pick up our Faux Septum Ring and a few of our nature inspired midi rings, and flip off the patriarchy in style.
